Frequently Asked Questions

Questions we hear often

Who is eligible to apply?

Any adult woman looking for safe, affordable, structured housing is welcome to apply. We serve veterans, seniors, women in sober living, women with special needs, and those receiving SSI or SSDI benefits. If you can live independently and take care of your own daily needs, Oakline may be a great fit.

What does "all bills paid" mean?

Your monthly rate covers rent, all utilities (gas, electric, water), cable television, telephone, food and groceries, housekeeping, and all household supplies. There are no hidden or surprise costs.

Do you accept SSI and SSDI?

Yes. We proudly work with women receiving SSI (Supplemental Security Income) and SSDI (Social Security Disability Insurance). We also work with representative payee companies and family members who pay on a resident's behalf.

How quickly can I move in?

In many cases, move-in can happen within 24 to 48 hours of approval. We move fast to make sure women are not without stable housing any longer than necessary.

Is this a drug and alcohol free home?

Yes, absolutely. All Oakline properties are strictly drug and alcohol free. This rule protects every resident and ensures a safe, calm, and respectful environment for everyone in the home.

What kind of housing is this exactly?

Oakline is private, all inclusive shared housing. We provide housing only. We do not provide medical care, therapy, or clinical services of any kind. Residents live as members of a household and manage their own daily personal care. Any outside support services come from a resident's own providers.

Can case workers refer clients?

Yes. We actively partner with case managers, social workers, hospitals, and non-profit organizations throughout Chicago. Use the referral form on this page or email us directly at infox@oaklinewomenssharedliving.com.

Are short term stays available?

Yes. We welcome both short term and long term residents. Whether you need housing for a few months while you get back on your feet, or you are looking for a long term home, there is a place for you at Oakline.

Chicago's Affordable Housing Gap

Chicago has a shortage of over 120,000 affordable units for extremely low-income renters. Women, especially those on fixed incomes, are disproportionately affected. Shared living is one of the most effective solutions.

Benefits of Shared Housing for Women

Research shows that shared housing reduces isolation, lowers cost burdens, and improves mental health outcomes for women in transitional periods. All-inclusive arrangements like Oakline remove the administrative barriers that derail stability.

How to Pay for Shared Housing

Residents can use SSI, SSDI, Housing Choice Vouchers (Section 8), Veterans benefits (VASH), or private pay. A representative payee can manage payments directly. Ask us about working with your case manager to set this up.
